South Kurdistan tries to cope with refugee crisis as war on ISIS continues

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq has purchased three ambulances to meet the health needs of refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region, after an emergency appeal launched in 2014 raised over $90,000.

The ‘Kurdistan Emergency Appeal’ is a fundraising initiative launched by the KRG’s UK Representation, in partnership with Pheonix Resource Centre on 8 December 2014, as a response to the humanitarian crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan–that has faced a financial crisis while at the same time fighting the Islamic State radical group (ISIS).

“We are grateful for the generosity of the people of the United Kingdom for responding to our appeal and their continuous support to the Kurdistan Region,” KRG High Representative to the UK, Karwan Jamal Tahir, said during the official ceremony to hand-over the three ambulances purchased by the Kurdistan Emergency Appeal.

“We also very much appreciate and highly regard the role the Committee and Pheonix Resource Centre played in this endeavor,” he said.

“The Kurdistan Region is a safe haven for over 1.8million Syrian refugees and internally displaced Iraqis who have fled the cult of death, Daesh [ISIS], with only the clothes on their back,” he added.

The KRG official called on the international community to do more to support the Kurdish government.

“[The KRG] is under immense financial pressure as a result of its own crises while it continues to provide for these people during their time in need,” he said.
